This week is Learning Disability week! #LDWeek2019
The theme this year is ‘Community:Active, Connected, Included’ Make sure that as parents you are involved in your School Community. Parental Engagement raises Child Attainment. During Learning Disability Week we would like to remind all schools how to support parents with learning disabilities themselves, or parents of children with learning disabilities. Get involved with Learning Disability Week and have your ‘Communi-Tea Party.’
For example, barriers such as written communications need to be addressed by schools. These barriers can be overcome by using Easy to Read Templates. The following two Easy to Read letter templates, provided by People First, were created with a group of parents with Learning Disabilities. One is an invitation to Parents Evening and the other is information for a school trip. We urge parent councils to encourage their school to use these templates.
Have a read of our Additional Support for Learning Nutshell here. You can download it or if you get in touch, we would be happy to send you some hard copies. At NPFS, we represent parents in pursuit of maximising every pupil’s potential. We help all parents and young people to get the support they need to reach their full learning potential.
Make sure you have a look at the Scottish Commission for Learning Disability website (SCLD) for more information about events happening near you this week, how you can get involved and more about the theme of ‘Community: Active, Connected, Included.’
The Scottish Government have published their guidance on “Supporting disabled children, young people and their families” This Guidance helps to improve the experiences of disabled children and their families.
