NPFS Parliamentary Reception

Celebrating 10 years of representing parents, the National Parent Forum of Scotland (NPFS) is having a reception at Scottish Parliament, Edinburgh on Wednesday 12thJune.  The event is being sponsored by Jenny Gilruth MSP and the keynote speaker is John Swinney, Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Education and Skills.

The event celebrates the dedication of all stakeholders in working in partnership with parents over the last ten years and will be the first of several NPFS events taking place throughout the year, across Scotland.

NPFS Chair, Joanna Murphy, said:

“We are thrilled to be starting off our 10thbirthday celebrations.  We’ve come a long way in the last ten years and we’re looking forward to thanking the many people who have supported the NPFS over the years, particularly our volunteer representatives from all over Scotland.”

Deputy First Minister, John Swinney, said:

“As well as supporting families across the country, the National Parent Forum of Scotland provides parents with a national voice in education decision making and I’d like to thank them for their contribution over the last decade.

“We know there is a strong relationship between parental engagement and positive outcomes for children and young people and we want all parents in Scotland to have the necessary guidance and tools to support their children’s education.

“Over the last ten years NPFS have played a crucial part in helping to shape our policies and strategies, including our ‘learning together’ National Action Plan on parental engagement, and I hope that we can continue to work together putting the voices of parents at the heart of education system for many years to come.”

The NPFS has participated in over 100 national groups, championing the parental voice with key decision makers. Its representatives ensure the voice of parents is heard at the highest levels of Scottish policy development, including the Scottish Education Council, the Empowering Schools programme and the Advisory Group for Additional Support for Learning.

Two years on since publishing its Review of the Impact of the Scottish Schools (Parental Involvement) Act 2006, the reception follows the publication of the Joint Interim Progress Report (2019).  This joint report, by the NPFS and ADES (Association of Directors of Education in Scotland) captures the significant progress that has been made since the review was published and the work that is on-going to build on this success.

The event also coincides with the publication of the NPFS Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) Nutshell series, part of the free resources to help parents understand the curriculum, assessment, qualifications, careers information and much more.
