As we know, parents play a crucial role in supporting their children’s learning, and levels of parental engagement are consistently associated with children’s academic outcomes.

Through monitoring and tracking, New Cumnock Primary School in East Ayrshire identified that the lack of parental engagement with the school was directly resulting in inequitable results for their pupils. With the support of external agencies, the school has addressed some of the barriers to parental engagement, producing an exemplar which can be followed by schools across the country.

The exemplar demonstrates how staff have implemented a strategic change initiative to address the complex issues surrounding parental engagement, working towards providing bespoke support to parents and families. The resource can be used as a template to support practitioners across Scotland as they work to address barriers to parental engagement.
